1) 200 lbs. lighter than GTI = hecks yes. 2) At least in the UK -- cheaper than GTI = hecks yes. 3) No real future for US = hecks...no.I expect good things...and I'm already salivating at the idea of more "performance" oriented versions. I do hate the wheels, and that blue though.

I predict this car will be very popular in Europe and rightly so. This is as good as FWD gets.

I tend to figure EVO as fact, because I agree with EVO in most cases. Yum... they also did very well in their class on the 24h ring.

this should be the "real" gti and make the current golf/gti a mini minivan...cuz thats what it looks likeThen they should develope/build a proper scirocco/corrado that is much more similiar to the last corrado.

Pardon my uber noob question, but I'm not very familiar VW...what's basically the difference between the Scirocco and Rabbit/GTI/R32? Do they cater to the same market? Is the Scirocco supposed to be sportier?

Scirocco have always been all about being "prettier" versions of Golf.

I don't get it then. They both look like small sporty hatchbacks catering to the same market segment. The Scirocco cost less and looks better than the GTI. Why would someone buy the GTI then?

The whole concept worked before and probably will this time too. The difference this time however, is that the new Scirocco is actually cheaper than GTI.

I think it has to do witht he fact that the MkV is being replaced with the cheaper MkVI. At that point the Scirocco will be the more expensive one. Still, the Scirocco seems like a much better buy.

One of the reasons the new Scirocco is cheaper is that it's constructed in Portugal rather than Germany.

The Scirocco and its descendant the Corrado were VWs sports coupes. They sacrifice a little bit of the Golfs utility for better performance...Both do cater to the same market, but Vdubbers tend to have their favorites. I think they can co exist in the U.S. market by making the New Scirocco more exclusive than the GTI (and more expensive too) ie put it in the slot that is vacated by the R32 every 4 years.

it worked before because the cars didnt not look alike. the gti was a boxy 2-door hatch while the scirocco/corrado was much more lower and sleeker--much more of a sports/GT car. Today they are way too similiar in styling and the new scirocco has none of the styling cues from the past scirocco/corrados. If you parked the the new scirocco in a parking lot and asked various people what the car was i will almost guarantee it that none of them would say its the "new" scirocco.

The Scirocco has traditionally had less space in the rear and been lighter. IMO they are different market segments.either way I really want one of those, as long as I can shave the emblem on the hood.

You have to look at it from the huge Euro market, not from the (currently small for VW) US market. The GTI is the sportier version of Europe's number one family car, and happens to also be available with a 2-door option. That doesn't make it a coupe. The Scirocco is from the ground up a sporty coupe, with different track and stance, and fewer "family car" compromises necessary when saving weight. The Euro market is simply big enough to easily allow for both. The Scirocco may also get the highly desired 270 or so hp turbo-four AWD combination.
VW EV, plug-in Hybrid, and/or 1.4-2.0 VVT&VVL T/dual-charged FSI engines for the US would be useful...

Neither do most of us. It used to be that the Scirocco (and even the Corrado, which was originally to be called Scirocco, but was renamed because it was in a higher price range) was sleeker, with a lower roofline and a fastback. Mk1 GTI:
 Mk1 Scirocco:
See the difference? The Mk2 Scirocco shared the same type of sleek low roofline and fastback hatch:
^^My car The Corrado followed suit:
As you can tell from the picture at the top of the page, the hatch on the new "Scirocco" is much more upright to provide more headroom for rear seat passengers. The result is a GTI with a lower roofline. It's partway to being a Scirocco, but not quite there.

True, but if you parked an old Scirocco in that same parking lot, most people would have no clue what it is either.
