30" Philips 30PW8402 Widescreen
Comcast/Motorola HD cable box
Old Sony DAV-S300 HTIB
Planning for either the new Panny or Sony DVD players that'll have HDMI out in the next month (TV has HDMI in), then later a new receiver (Panny or Marantz are the leading contenders), speakers (Athena maybe), etc. since the Sony doesn't even have progressive out & only has one optical audio in (currently stolen from the Xbox & fed to the cable box).
Something weird I found out - the optical audio is being sent even when the cable box is off, at least that's what I think I found out - turned the cable box off, left the Sony unit on, was getting sound but no picture - weird.

gotapex, that is a great setup. How about some more info on the Dukane 9017? Costs, more specs etc...? |
Thanks. It used to change all the time (went through about 10 projectors in last 4 years or so). Now that I have a baby, I haven't even watched anything for AGES. Sad, eh?
The Dukane ImagePro 9017 is the clone of the JVC DLA-SX21u (only difference is the Dukane has a 5 year warranty, the JVC has 2 year. MSRP is $15,300, and $11,999 on JVC), the projector Jerry Bruckheimer had in his home screening room (though he's since switched to the DLA-QX1, which costs $225,000 not including the lens).
3-Chip D-ILA/LCOS
Native resolution: 1400 x 1050 (1400 x 788 in 16:9 mode)
1500 ANSI lumens (closer to 1200, in my opinion)
800:1 contrast
>93% fill factor
2000 Hour 250w NSH bulb
DVI, VGA, component, s-vid, and composite inputs
13lbs
People buy D-ILA for the colors. They give a very natural, filmlike picture, with rich, accurate colors. DLP's still have the edge for contrast.
BTW, most of my stuff I either didn't pay for, or got at an extremely discounted price. I'm not completely nuts.

Ahh yes, the 56" DLP. Yea, I tried to get the floor model when my store closed. This co-worker of mine got to the store 10 mins earlier and took it.
But i got both of those 2 46" plasmas.
Anyway, I would just to the Gateway website. Under support and pick the 56" DLP. It will have all the info you need (codes etc..) and then some.

I called them, asking them who REALLY made my tv, and they wouldn't tell me. so i did some research, and it looks like SAMPO makes it. So i tried both gateways codes, and sampos, according to the Comcast Remote, and none of them work.
it's a pain having to push the on/off button everytime i turn on/off the tv. i'm getting worried if i wear that button out, i'll be poop out of luck.

Their products now suck too.
That is correct. Sampo does make the 56" Gateway DLP. I stumbled across the thread on the AVS forum. You might want to take a look at it quinntendo. I didn't read the whole thing but I think you will find the answer to the problem you are having...

GOTAPEX is a pimp What is the definition of a fill factor? WHy the use of a bathroom rail to mount the projector? |
All digital devices are pixel based. Each pixel has a dark space around it:
![]()
The ratio of the lit center space to the entire space is called the fill factor.
LCD projectors typically have a 40-60% fill factor. This gives you the illusion of looking at the picture through a screen door (also known as the screen door effect). Newer Multi-Lens Array (MLA) equipped LCD's have a rated fill factor of upwards of about 80% of so, but it still appears lower than this.
Single chip consumer DLP's have a fill factor of about 85%. The 3-chip cinema models have a fill factor of 88-90%, sometimes more.
DILA/LCOS projectors have a fill factor of >92% on average, giving you the most smooth, filmlike picture (holding other specs constant).
I'm using a handicap rail for the mounting because I tend to change projectors so often. Each projector has a different throw distance, and, more importantly, each has an IDEAL distance for contrast and brightness within the available optical zoom range. The rail allows me to mount each projector the correct distance for optimal visual quality, without having to build a new mount each time.
BTW, I'm not a pimp, if I was, I'd be using this:

JVC DLA-QX1G 3-chip D-ILA Projector
QXGA native (2048 x 1536)
7000 ANSI lumens
1000:1 contrast (actually, much higher now, this was initial rating)

Compared to what I had before, a 27" Zenith with Fuzzy-vision, I sit and stare at it, sort of like if someone brought George Washington into this age and showed him TV.
And, the receiver and speakers? I bought them last year to replace my 1980s JVC and my, I'm not kidding, two sets of KLH speakers that were about 30 years old.
We had two people over for Thanksgiving that otherwise would have been alone. One was a colleague of my wife. My wife was telling people about the new TV last week. And he chimes in with ... he's European, but getting very Americanized, apparently ... "that's good. You have such a beautiful house. But, you had such a crappy TV."
p.s. One of the things on the sub is the antennae for the wireless speakers, so I can go sit on the screen porch, have a cigar, and watch TV. It's is MUCH BETTER with the new TV. I can actually watch it from out there now.

how much and how big are those seats? where did you get them? our problem is our media room is too small for the size of screen we have. there are only two goods seats in the room (the back two). we're trying to find a way to re-construct the room but we're having problems with seating and the such.
nice setup, either way.

Yes, you can in theory. In practice, it still depends on your room. You should experiment with it and see if it sounds good in your listening position.

I did exactly that and heard NO difference. I like my Athena Tech/Best Buy setup better than the Paradigm stuff I heard at a dealer and I walked out the door from BB with a 700w 7.1 Yammy receiver, 2 floorstanders, 2 rears, 1 center, a 10" powered sub and cables for $1100 bucks.

This is somewhat misleading.
The speaker system probably has a total retail cost of around $3000. But that's for the system, which is made up of pairs of speakers in the $300-$600 range.
You are not comparing a pair of Athenas with a pair of high end speakers.

$10k for speakers isn't so bad...especially when there are "Headphone amplifiers" and "CD Transports" that go for that much. But to each their own. My mechanic has the Krell CD transport (bought used @ $7,000), mated with a $500 DAC for a long time. He's given up on that setup for a $150 SACD player...says its leaps and bounds better than what he's had. This coming from a guy who can't fix my car because he's on road trips picking up hi-fi gear that he'd bought on e-bay, audiogon, etc.
Bottom line kids, is that a killer setup, doesn't "have" to cost an arm and a leg...and just because it does, doesn't mean its better. I "just" got my CAL CD player and when it was new, was $800 less than what was "supposed" to be the better model in CAL's line. I heard MUCH more detail and dynamics in the lower priced unit. After a 3 year wait/search, now I have one.

lol, I only paid $200 for that as it is shared among 5 other housemates. Maybe if I didn't have a $2000+ system in my car I could afford analog is what you should be saying lol. Maybe once I get out of school (which might take a while if I get into med school ) then I will go analog.Nice system |
Thanks. You can pick up used PV-10As for about $500-$600, and go solid state on the back end. An older McCormack DNA-.5 or 1.0 would go nicely. You would get an analog "effect", and gain a little "air" and "dynamics".
Or, we could go halvsies on (3) C-J Premier 8 monoblocks on this ebay auction:

| Why would analog be desireable to some people? I am not being a jerk, I really don't know. |
For me, after hearing the likes of Rowland, Krell, Levinson, etc., I just feel that tubes give more "dynamics" and "texture" to music. I listen to my Rotel (solid state), and the sound is flat and has no "slam"...like a cymbal crashing or a sax that you "feel" not just hear. I use it for spinning and TV watching now.
I listen to a lot of old jazz and female singers. The tubes give more of a lifelike quality to vocals and the midrange as a whole. Depth of sound stage is better that a lot of digital amps as well. Different tubes and amps give different qualities as well. I'm not saying that there isn't any good digital out there...it's just that the first time I heard tubes, I'd sworn there was a band in the room.

If you sat down and listened to a good high-end turntable played on a decent system, you would understand.

no i was comparing the combo which ='s one floor stand speaker when set in the floor stand speaker mode....it's 4 seperate speakers that when combined make 2 complete floor stand speakers. and retail when they came out was $1100 usd for each sub and around that for the set so yes 3000 my mistake |
Sorry, don't mean to be a pain, but I'm not quite following this.
I assumed you were referring to a whole HT set-up. But you do say it was a pair of speakers, but you don't mention exactly which model.
The top of the range S3/P3 combo was made up of a satellite pair that originally retailed for $600, and the two sub woofer units which were priced at $600 each. That makes $1800 for the pair. What am I missing?

let's make a car analogy, since that's what we all come here for. Do you think your gti/jetta whatever is so awesome (it has been stated that the difference between consumer grade products and high end audio is minimal) that you could not tell the difference in handling, acceleration or fit & finish from say a porsche 997 carrera s?
In my experience that is essentially the difference between "best buy" speakers/electronics and true HIFI, krell, linn, mark levinson, meridian there are so many.
So it is frustrating to hear people say thier gti is as good as the porsche and that they doubt anyone could tell the difference. There is an obvious difference. I'm not saying you are a bad person if you have stuff from best buy and like it, or that the guy with a $30,000 setup is better than you.
I'm simply saying there is a huge difference and if you can't hear it you have no business posting on the HT forum, just read and learn.

...so am I elitist if I spent more on my "amp's" interconnects than I did on my TV and DVD player combined?
...and yes, this thread does need more pictures...of tube gear.
Just remember kids (read "everybody", since we really are just talking about toys in this forum), it's all about being happy, "within your budget". Most of the fun/pain is found in piecing together your setup.

| I actually like that color.....but why didnt you finish the ceiling??? |
Well,
I didn't want to put in a dropped ceiling and lose the head room. I am about 6'1" and feel a little clausterphobic in basements with dropped ceilings.
Friends of mine sprayed their ceiling a dark green. I liked the look of it. But, it was a little too dark. So, we picked a complimentary color for the ceiling and went with it. A finished ceiling would finish off the room a bit more, but this is just a basement after all. Didn't want to spend too much.
I thought about putting in drywall or some kind of ceiling that goes directly on the joists. But, that makes me afraid in case I ever have to get at anything like pipes or wiring.
So, went the cheap way and painted everything.

I assume you mean the cable connection under the screen? Simply there was no way to get back behind that wall. Unless we wanted to go downstairs to the formal living room and cut a huge access hole in the ceiling.....
The speakers are Paradigm Monitor 11's up front, Center is a CC-370 and rears are paradigm di-poles. Sub is again a paradigm seismic 12. I have rotel receiver and DVD player, XBOX, and Comcast HD. Finally the projector is an infocus 4805 and Stewart filmscreen.

Yea, I was also referring to the front speaker connections. Nice choice of equipment. I'll probably go Rotel for my next system. |
The front speaker wires are attached to plates on the front wall. The cable is only about 2 feet long. I guess I could hide it a bit.

Oddly enough, no. That room was carpeted when I moved in. Sound is virtually identical with the hardwood compared to when it was carpet.
I think the reason for this is how open the room is. It's a little tough to tell from the pictures, but it's a loft overhead (so not a complete ceiling), with the back wide open to the kitchen.. Might be different if it was all enclosed.

Sorry for the late response, I haven't checked in here in a bit...
The dog is actually a miniature Saint Bernard. I say miniature because she was the runt of the litter, and her Dad was short hair, so at 100lbs she doesn't look like the typical Beethoven Bernard. Here's a pic: http://oregonstate.edu/~crouch...9.jpg
I love the NAD, it's the 7100. It's only rated at 60w x 2, but it's amazingly clean and powerful. Lots of my friends who aren't audiophiles comment that they've never been able to listen to music at such a volume and enjoy it.
The Alpha 40's were kind of an impulse buy, but they fit the room perfectly. They're admittedly not as clean as something like a Paradigm monitor, but then again, I couldn't afford those at the time anyway! The sound from the ceramic composite cones is quite good, and I really like the highs of the Infinity tweeters. Acoustic guitar on these is fantastic.
Sorry for the long post, beats working though

I'm just getting into it, thanks to a few friends of mine who are WAY into it. I've been buying all their old stuff off of them as they upgrade.
Mainly though, I like it for music. Not too into movies.
No pics yet... I should probably take a few, eh?
TV: Sony KD-34XBR960 (34" tube)

DVD: Sony DVP-NS975V

Center: PSB Image C40
Rears: PSB Alpha minis (old but still sound good)
Sub: PSB SubZero i
Next step is an updated DVD player (that can do both SACD and DVD-A), along with finishing up the rest of my cables (mostly StraightWire stuff, but I have a few stragglers left that I haven't done yet.) I'd also like to get rid of the Alpha mini's, move my T45s to the rear, and pick up a set of T55s for the fronts. That's probably a little ways off tho - got too many expensive hobbies at the moment!

Not the best pics, but gets the job done. As you can see we are big "Black 'N Gold" fans! Its that time of the year again!

Excuse the bar stools for speaker stands...I was experimenting with the height... I'll be using wall mounts very soon.
Equipment List.
TV: Samsung HLP 4663
Receiver: JVC RX8000V (had it for years - will be replaced by Pioneer 1015)
Speakers: Fluance SX package (very good bang for the buck!)
For the price I could not pass these up...figured if they dont sound too good, not much is lost. Well I was VERY surprised how well they sounded and kept them.
Sub: Velodyne VRP 10
DVD: Samsung HD-841
Direct TV: Samsung SIR 360 (HD)
Remote: Harmony 680
Other: PS2, TiVo (series 2), APC UPS for TV.
So far all of my equipment has worked pretty good other than the DVD player not being the best with dark, dark scenes. Overall a modest setup, but works well in the rather small living room.
Once we build our house, my wife already ok'd a major upgrade and a dedicated room.

| Alright, my setup. It's not technically home theatre as I don't have a center channel or surrounds. I use it primarily for music and therefore only need stereo. I also support "Real Stereo" so I don't think I'll be getting a center channel even if I get surrounds. Ok, that's enough audiophile elitism for now: Preamp: Adcom GTP-500 (used mostly for the phono stage) Edit: Forgot the TV: Hitachi 46W500 Some pretty bad pictures. I really need to take some during the day and when things are clean. All in all I'd say it's pretty good for a college student (and yes, I bought everything myself; well, the sub was a gift). |
How do you like the NHT SB-3's?? I've got a pair as well, and so far love 'em. The day I bought them, I hooked them up and popped in the Eagle's "Hell Freezes Over" DVD. I was amazed how holographic the imaging was, and how broad the soundstage was.
How is the NAD integrated amp working out? Right now I'm using a Harmon Kardon reciever. Their one downside is that they're not very efficent speakers. I feel like I'm underpowering them, they lack a bit of punch. Any thoughts?
EDIT: Does it make me crazy if I've waxed my NHT's with Meguiars NXT Tech Wax???

of course not, at least now if you decide to leave your speakers outside in the sun and rain you can rest assured that the finish on them will be preserved well!

Pioneer SX-255R ProLogic II receiver, circa-1997
JVC DR-M10 DVD Recorder (can't wait to upgrade)
Sony VCR, also circa-1997
Motorola DCT 6412 HD DVR
Sony PS2
Panasonic TH-42PX75U 42" Plasma

I love the TV. The Pioneer receiver is lo-tech, but it's a workhorse. The JVC DVD recorder needs to be replaced.

My View: (I don't know how to take a picture of the TV without having that rainbow effect)
Here's the rest of my bedroom for those who care:

Edit: For those wondering...yes, that is a picture of George Costanza in his underwear above my TV. I am not gay....not that there's anything wrong with that!!

| same here. but damn new management requires 5 days a week of 5 hours minimum. |
It's not the amount of days that I have to work, it's the amount of hours. I can work 5 days with 5 hour shifts. I told my manager during the school year I want no more than 30 hours a week. I work at office depot, it's a part time job, not a career. I make a little over 10 an hour, so i usually make about 200-250 a week depending on how many extended warranties I sell (we get a small commission on attaching warranties to laptops/cameras/printers etc). That's more than enough for gas needs and being able to take my girl out to dinner, and buy a movie or game once in a blue moon. Not to mention, even if I did want more hours, it wouldn't be possible. We don't make enough sales to be able to give all the people a ton of hours, and the majority of the hours we have available go to the full-timers first

finally. Spent the majority of the day routing cables under the carpet for surrounds and calibrating my system. The rear stands are a little too low. I will probably replace them to something around 36" tall. Gotta replace frosted glass doors on the cabinet with ventilated mesh. Place still needs some paintings and small furnishings, just moved in so i had to prioritize my entertainment system
Pioneer 5070HD TV
Pioner Elite 84TXS-i Receiver
B&W 685's Fronts

Paradigm Titans Rear Surround
Paradigm PDR series sub
Panamax 5100EX Power Conditioner

| what do you think of those B&W Speakers? |
for the price you really can't beat them. The deal i got them at, i definitely couldn't pass them up
But even at full retail i think they are well worth it. Detail isn't too bright or too harsh, for being a standmount you'd think it would lack bass. I actually had to turn down my sub. Bass feels great and slightly warm. Imaged very well and pretty spot on.
originally i was going to get 683's for the fronts later down the line and move the 685's to the rears, hence why i got the HTM61's as a center channel. So far it doesn't sound like i need the 683's after all, but you know how that goes
Also the HTM61's sounded a lot more well rounded than the HTM62
absolutely no regret at all

I worked at the Elk Grove store up in Sac. I was a Mag pro 4 up there before becoming an ESS tech. I have some pretty decent equipment (Denon DVD3910, Pioneer Elite VSX-72, Panasonic TH-50PZ700) And I've used everything from the $300 Audioquest cables we used to carry, to the new Monster M-Series, Ultra 1000, Ultra 800, and Dynex HDMI cables and there is no visible difference between the $300 cable and $30 cable.
So yeah while the discounts are good on monster cables, its still not worth it and I'd rather spend $5 for the dynex cables.

I've been in the room when RCA stereo audio cables were double-blind switched between two identical cd players with albums that were as close to dead-on matched in timing as possible, and had been level matched at the amplifier output. This was using McIntosh MA6500 integrated amp, McIntosh MCD201 CD player, and Sonus Faber Cremona M's. No one in the room could hear an audible difference between an Audioquest Alpha-snake and Diamondback interconnect. No one could hear a difference between Diamondback and Monster Cable M850 interconnects.
I've been in the room when Component video cables were switching-tested on an ISF-calibrated Sony KD-34XBR970 with OTA HD broadcast as the source. No one could see a difference between a set of Acoustic Research cables and a set of Monster Cable Video 3 cables. No one could see a difference between the Monster Video 3 and Audioquest YIQ-3 component video cables.
Any difference you perceived is purely in your head, unless your old cables were in some way damaged.

I used the dynex cable and saw a huge difference when i switched to monster. but that might have been because of the fact that I also got a receiver at that same time that processes video. however, i dont see how you can make it look that much different just by video processing. However, I use dynex for most other things.

Yes, Osiris voices strong opinions about certain pieces of equipment, but he's a wealth of knowledge and experience, and the essence of his post is correct. It's like someone paying $500 for a Tom Clancy novel because they like the way the cover looks, but all the text inside is blurry and hard to read. That's great if the buyer likes it, but they open themselves to legitimate criticism of spending their money in a poor manner.

Ultimately that's all that matters. Even Bose, or any HTIB, is going to be a big step up from the stereo speakers in a flat panel TV.
To me, it's just frustrating that so many people buy into Bose because of the marketing, and don't realize they can get higher quality, better sounding products for less money.

You can see the casement for the screen in the first couple pictures.

well, the lights are pretty much on when those pics were taken. not
full tilt, but the dimmer is on like 70%. yeah, the screen is motorized,
but it's not flush. the casing is mounted to the ceiling, which is about
3.5 - 4 inches, and then it drops down.
no real use for the motorized though, it never goes up. how can i go back to a 46" DLP? hehehehe

Beautiful. That's pretty much what my dream set up looks like. The only thing I would do different is I would find a way to cover the equipment under the screen. The lights they emit would annoy me.

i find with the onkyo reciever, they don't sound as warm as the
pioneer did, but still awesome none the less.

I have to ask: what receiver do you have driving that beautiful B&W 6-series HT? I'm looking for a good receiver capable of powering a pair of 801 fronts and 803 rears. |
You're going to run these with a "receiver"? Sacrilege!

I'm currently using a Pioneer Elite VSX-82 for a pair of 804N and it doesn't sound great at all! Can't imagine running 801 and 803 together off a receiver!

Somoething like an all-in-one "receiver" which has amplification, input selection (pre-amp for all intents and purposes), and sound processing, will probably not be well matched, if you by-pass the amplification, and send the signal to a quality amp. It also may struggle to drive the 801s properly.
Its mostly going to depend on what you want to do with your signal. Do you simply want line level control of your 4-5 speakers" Or do you want to add "sound effects" via the processor as well?
If it were me, I'd go with :
- (1) 2-channel amp for the 801s, if not a separate amp for each speaker
- (1) 3-channel, or (1) 5-channel amp for the surrounds
- Whatever matched pre-amp-processor to control it all.
I'm sure something like this Krell would be overkill as far as cost, but it is basically a pre-amp, with Dolby processing, supports HDMI, and has an analog by-pass for when you want to switch to "music only":

Lexicon and other like perfoming companies could work as well:

If I could afford it, I would monoblock with these monsters, like this example (these seem like overkill for 805s, but what do I know):

edit: SO, I just discovered that my parents not only have a McIntosh integrated amp (already knew about that), but a McIntosh pre-amp and power amp, along with a McIntosh CD player and some high-quality bi-wire cable. Is any of this being used? NO! Not sure of the model numbers yet, but I will find out, and ensure that the 803s are promptly removed from the sh!tty Fisher receiver to which they are currently chained and placed where they belong. I can't believe my parents have had this equipment sitting in the garage collecting dust.
If I can't get them to hook it up properly, I'm taking it all to my place. Justice will be served.

The sound isn't as good off axis. You have to be right in the sweet spot for a horizontal center channel to sound correct. Center channels are mostly horizontal for aesthetic purposes.

| For 99% of people out there, they wont be able to tell the difference of the orientation of the center channel. I say it looks goofy and doesnt cover as much area as well. It sits too high for the proper listening level. The tweeter of ANY front channel speaker should to be at eye level (ear level) when seated.

How is that possible when my TV is at eye level...? Its facing downwards at the listening area. What other choice would I have had?
Post Title: Re: (VeeDub_L_U)

That is what i have for a center. I dont prefer big centers because of their difficulty of placement. They cover on screen voice reproduction mostly and if you look at the frequency specs this small speaker with 3.5" cones and a tweeter covers to 120 hz. No human voice can go that low and anything below is covered by the sub for say, explosions, anyways.
http://www.infinitysystems.com...ry=US
Thats just me though. I am kind of anal. i actually measured my floor speakers distance from the walls, the tv and tv stand to make sure they are equal. They angel in toward a central location and i made sure their angels were equal as well. Same as with my rears.
Sorry...

I disagree with your statement that "99% of people won't be able to tell the difference." The only reason why center channel speakers have become horizontally aligned is of aesthetic purposes. A horizontally-aligned MTM design is going to introduce lobing in all listening positions besides directly in front of the speaker. Also, your comment about having a smaller sweet spot do to being vertically aligned is erroneous.
I do agree with you that having the tweeter as close to the center of the image as possible is ideal, but with the sort of viewing distance that he's working with, I would be the difference in image height would be negligible.

My preference is small center channels that fit on the tv stand right in front of the tv. That is what i have for a center. I dont prefer big centers because of their difficulty of placement. Human vocal range has been measured below 80hz. Also, most people can localize bass frequencies above 80hz, so having them come from the subwoofer instead of their intended channels is less than ideal, regardless of whether or not it is dialogue.

You can get quality pre-made acoustic panels from a number of online vendors. I have seen ATS acoustics and GIK acoustics panels before, and they were both adequate quality. If there is any interest in the forum, I can probably write something basic up about how to place acoustics treatments.

Yeah that'd be really great. I'd love to get some acoustic panels but its limited in Canada. I might build them myself, but once I do I'd have no idea where to place them. Do you have suggestions based on the pictures?

My REAL basic setup: 47" Vizio 1080P LCD, a Dish Network VIP722 HD Receiver/DVR, and a Sharp Aquos BD-HP20 Blu-Ray player (not shown here).
Trying to decide what to do about sound. Not sure if I should go 2.1, 3.1, 5.1, or sound bar. Main issue is that here is the other side of the room:

You can see the cathedral ceilings, and the fireplace that prevents us from running wires to behind the couch (other side is walkway to the bedrooms.) A 2.1, 3.1, or soundbar system would be easiest, but I would like to do 5.1 and mount some surrounds in the rear ceiling, wiring it through the attic. Obviously, this is the hardest and most $$$$ solution, so I'm not sure. Honestly, a good candidate for this would be a Bose system, just because of the all-in-one nature of it and the small satellite speakers. We want it for TV, movies, and also just for playing background music for us and for parties. Nothing really fancy.
Anyone else tackled this issue in the same house layout?
All that said, I want to keep it simple and inexpensive up there, because of my plans for down here:

Between the (sump pump) closet and where the ceiling drops down a foot, there is more than enough space to put a 120" screen for a projector. Then I'd like to do built-in speakers and a whole nice home theater. This will be probably $6k+, so it's a few years off, hence wanting something simple in the great room upstairs.

| I am thinking about buying a new home and would really like to have a "theatre room". I am considering to buy a 50" 1080p tv for the room. what would be the ideal room dimensions and viewing distance for that size television. also what colors should the walls be painted? |
for a 50" TV anything bigger than 5-6' should be fine
for a non-projector setup wall color isn't as critical, ideally you want a neutral grey but good luck getting WAF (wife acceptance factor)
i can't comment on room dimensions from a acoustical point of view since that's beyond me but my guess is something with few/no windows would be a good starting point.

Not my theater room, but I had to do something for my wife in the bed room
.
I installed yesterday Monoprice's in-wall speakers in the sitting room of my bedroom.
I installed 4 of these as the front and rears and 1 of this as the center channel. They sound great and according to AVSforum.com, after 20 hours of play, they will break in nicely.
Cut out for center channel F'n stud
After 2/3 of the stud removed for speaker clearance.
Left front
Right front
Left rear
Right rear
My handy man with the drywall saw

Rear of center channel
All installed, and Wow Wow Wubbzy shows how my wife feels

Components are:
Sony Bravia 46" XBR6
Yamaha RX-V1900
Pioneer Elite Blu-Ray
Polk Audio CSi A4
Polk Audio RTi A3's (bi-amped)
Polk Audio PSW 111 (not seen in pict)
Polk Audio FXi3 surrounds (not in pict)
I used painted cable runners. All the gear is on an external wall, and I didn't really want to run cables through that.

Surround sound and lots of speakers is a myth, the best stereo you will ever hear in your life will come from 2 speakers a great amp and a great pre amp
People who put as many speakers as they can fit in a room and hook it all up to the same pre amp are doing themselves such an in justice.

Yes i would argue that
I think that a surround sound is only necessary and useful with the ideal set up, i am not talking about necessarily the quality of the components but more the acoustics of a room, placement of the speakers, placement of the tv, and also placement of the furniture. All these things play a factor in a surround sound, and much less with stereo sound. Why waste the time running wires and switching around a room for surround sound when to the untrained ear it will sound just the same or better

You don't think stereo sound suffers more than surround due to poor room acoustics, poor speaker placement, and poor furniture placement?

How? you have 5 different speakers in more areas of the room with more distortion bouncing off more places, plus sometimes with a 5 speaker set up, your sitting to far away to hear the sound from the speaker and can miss sound effects and background noises with a stereo coming right at you there is much less chance to miss out on those sounds

Well unfortunately I test out way to much equipment so it changes out every few weeks. And most of the time its prototype equipment that I cant post pics of
However once me and the daddyo get our upstairs floors redone we will be putting a finalize system up there, currently all of our speaker we used to use in our family/greatroom/kitchen/giant ass room are in storage because of flooring work. however here is a list of what will be in the room...
Polk everything of course
LS70 towers
Monitor 5B
LSi9
LsiC
LSi FX
DSW pro 600 (x4)
once spring time comes I will setup my speakers up in my room for a final system then my broom will consist of the following
RTi A9 towers
CSi A6 Center
(no surrounds as my room is waaaaaaay to small and would cause some retarded waves)
DSWmicropro 2000 (x2)
oh and my RT55i bookshelves will go in as well.
There is a downside to working for a manufacturer and it that I never really can have a "finished" system as im always testing...and testing....and testing....

Because most people with poorly set up surround sound systems are looking for the "surround sound feel." As long as they get sound coming form behind them or somewhere other then infront of the TV then they are happy.... That or as long as its "louder" they're happy.... Plus recievers now adays can complensate for poorly setup speaker placement... Plus look at all the single bar "surround sound" speakers are out there. People will buy them set it up and rave to their friends how they have surround sound without the rear speakers...
There is ususally more detail lost in a poorly setup stereo system. You loose the sound stage and depth if placement isn't set up properly. You can make outstanding speakers sound like a transistor radio if its not setup peoperly...

I have his back too. There's nothing wrong with your setup bro. Not everyone has the budget or the space for a "properly" calibrated system in a perfect acoustical enviroment with top of the line equipment . You make due with what you have and if you enjoy it then thats all that matters. Ignore the "purists"in here with their holier than thou attitudes.

I used to have them on speaker stands next to the t.v and people were continuously bumping into them and trying to put a beer onto of them, it was either take them out of the living room or hide them some what. what would you do

my setup is on page 11. I'm not the biggest expert on this board, but that is definitely not ideal. They are way too close, sitting horizontally, and boxed into a TV stand.
Post Title:
Posted by: BUGSNSTONE at 11:15 AM 3/2/2009

I would certainly have these hooked up to get my ideal sound your talking about.
If it were a problem that they were horizontally then these matrix speakers would be terrible because they are basically the same thing but just with the tweeter on top and always stay horizontal.

I can understand that your a college student and things can happen... I had a similar setup while I was at school, but still to claim what you've been claiming about surround sound vs stereo, and then tell us that your set up "rocks" is ridiculous.... I know when I had my bookshelfs in my stand like that the sound was crap, but I had no choice. The TV was in a corner and there was no space for the speakers except for in the stand or behind the TV. You're such a Hypocrite saying ideal speaker placement is necessary and that distortion will be audible in non ideal setup yet you think your set up is perfectly fine...
to give you reference here is my setup:
Any while most would think this setup sounds good.... The setup isn't ideal and its definitely lacking a lot of sound stage and depth.... Speakers are about 20" away from the wall and about 75" apart. I'm sitting about 12' away from the speakers. They were powered by a Pioneer Elite Receiver, but I've upgraded to a Rotel 2ch receiver... Its a good system, but I know it can sound much better....

| My bad guys, I didn't realize it was amateur hour on this forum. First, augello4646 is just pissed because I'm pushing 8 12s when he only has 7 and it took me 3 less speakers to do it. And nothing says "disgruntled old man" like isoprene's post. They aren't " centers", they are dust caps. it doesn't effect the sound and the guy's daughter who owned them before me pushed them in ( though i do plan on replacing them soon). Who in there right mind would put the grills on these? That's like asking your hot girlfriend to wear a bag over her head. And of course they're big! I don't know about you guys but I love sound, I love quality sound, and I love loud quality sound. Where are all the stereo buffs out there? Whens the last time you went to a concert and they had a bunch of bookshelf speakers and one powered sub in the corner somewhere. I'm not saying they're the greats speakers ever but even isoprene has to admit these are pretty cool. |
| Quote, originally posted by InsaNeil » |
| Your right about ppl pushing dust caps in at parties, but I can't have any parties because of my neighbors (i can only get away with bumping my system during the day) so they're a little more safe. But you have to admit, those college speakers ur talking about never have 4 12s per speaker. I was ganna try pulling them out but I thought it would be a lot sweeter to just put new ones in. Do you know anything about that? I know the size but are there different levels of quality in dust caps? I could see a stiffer, lighter one sounding better. |
Let me summarize two of your posts and the reasoning why you do not have any idea what you are talking about regarding speakers...
bold # 1 - Amateur hour? ... really, Post up more "truths" when you get even a quarter of the experience of some of the guys in here. Folks like osiris and isoprene have time and time again proved that they know what sound is and how it should be created.
bold #2 - contradicted below in your other post
bold #3 - By your thinking on that post with those speakers your girl must have one busted a$$ face..
bold #4 - You love sound quality and loud sound. my thinking is you have never actually heard true Sound quality, you have only heard loud sound.
I have finished my piece... no more BS lets all get back on topic with shots of some your Home theater Setups...
Post Title: Re: (BUGSNSTONE)

I think my speakers are pretty cool;
Bass Reflex System 3 way 6 speaker system
(4)12" woofers
(1)13" midrange horn
(1)4" dome tweeter
(2) 2-3/4 exhaust ports
Impedance: 8 ohms
Maximum input power 700W
But I did my research and here's a FUN FACT:
These items were never sold (new) in the United States. They were sold only through AFES, the Armed Forces Exchange Service, located at US bases around the world. One of the AFES missions is to provide quality merchandise and services of necessity and convenience to licensed customers.
That's all fact, but I HEARD Kenwood did this as a favor to our service men and had super low profit margins and I also HEARD they are the biggest Kenwood speakers ever made. I'm not a real Kenwood fan but that's some cool stuff, and at the $40 a piece I bought them for, I'm pumped.

Music system (this is almost vintage stuff now):
Denon DRA-325R receiver
Denon DRM-600 cassette deck
Boston Acoustics A70 Series II speakers (incredible value... I got these at the recommendation of my local high-end stereo shop and realized years later what a favour they did selling me these)
JVC XL-V440BK CD player (this thing is old but in the mid 90's I did some comparison listening to Nakamichi and Denon players and decided I prefered the older unit)

I'd have liked to spend some time saving for a model with more inputs and power but I'd previously bought a Sony receiver to build my system around and that suffered a terminal electronic failure. I wasn't in a position to spend a lot on the receiver when I was all queued up for a new display and new speakers. The 606 was highly recommended by osiris, Ferris and a few other members here so I went for it with a total blind purchase.
The only critique is that it runs a little hot so you have to be mindful of ventilation. It's no hotter than my HD cable box but it's a lot hotter than the Sony it replaced.
In a nutshell, the 606 does everything most HT users need at a bargain basement price. Highly recommended.

Bold #2-I did not contradict myself, a high quality dust cap will noticeably sound the same pushed in or not, same with a low quality one. I actually asked a question I knew the answer to just to snuff the beef and maybe isoprene would know where to find them online.
Bold #3-My girlfriend doesn't have a busted face bc I don't have or want a girlfriend, I'm having too much fun hooking up with all the hot, strange, college tail that your probably thinking of when you touch yourself, and I'd still rather look at my bumping pushed in dust caps than a piece of cloth grill.
Bold #4- Already proved wrong and horn mids and dome tweeters are known for maintaining quality at high volumes.
Bold #1- Amateur hour was a joke, osiris and isoprene seem to know a good deal and I value their opinion, but while we're talking about it, I'm a senior mechanical engineering major at Uconn. So I took Calculus Based Physics II which is all the physics behind electricity, resistors, capacitors, inductors etc. I took Electric Circuit Design where we studied a variety of electronics including amps, equalizers, and other circuits. I took Material Science which studies properties of materials on both micro and macro scales and how manufacturing processes effects these properties, which includes conductors, semiconductors, and much more. And then I took Mechanics of Vibrations which directly relates to speakers. On top of all this my dad thinks I have a problem bc I research commercial electronics so much. I'm not going to say whether this trumps your "customer service" position at Polk, but I'm not as retarded as you'd like to think.
BuPsychBass sorry to carry this on. I look forward to seeing your sweet set up.

Finally got my center channel and rears installed (the flash really shows the speakers behind the color-matched grilles):

Behind the TV (this was a bitch to wire as it's on an exterior wall):

TV: Samsung LN46A550
AV Receiver: Sony STR-DE835 (old, but has enough optical inputs for me)
Blu-Ray: Samsung BDP-1500
Monoprice HDMI Switch
Monoprice cables
Monoprice speakers (8" front, 5.25" center, 6.5" rear)
Sony 10" subwoofer (freebie)
AppleTV
I need to get some shelving up in the AV closet before I take pics, but it has AV connections in the back wall like I have behind the TV. I have a 5.1 2-gang plate on the way from monoprice to clean the speaker connections up (right now they just come through a keystone jack hole.)

Thanks. I plan on getting a new receiver in the near future to take advantage of the HDMI switching. Thinking of a Sony under $400. I'm happy with the one I have now though, plenty of power for my application. I have some Infinity towers in the rear as well for my rear surrounds but want to get some ceiling speakers later as well. What size would I need for a fairly small living room (roughly 12x15')?

I disagree. They do run hot, but I had a 304 for 2 years before I sold it and moved to the 505. Granted, it can't do audio through HDMI, but its still a great receiver that I've had no complaints about it. Most on here love the 606, but I'll probably wait until the 507 comes out, I live in an apt and can't turn up the vol too much so the wpc aren't as important to me as long as its clean power

Mine is 2 years old and works perfectly, and I know several other people who love their Onkyo's and have had zero issues. The only thing I have heard is that their customer service sucks if you do need to use it.

Yes, but I removed the the back cover of the entertainment shelf so it can dissipate heat. First day i put it behind the door and let it run for an hour it got pretty warm in there. Much better now even with the front door closed.

They make the best speaker I've ever personally heard, and I've been in front of my fair share of speakers.
They are the Bugatti Veyron of speakers- only attainable by the super rich, and the vast majority of the owners are more interested in owning them because of that fact than because of their performance. It seems like every time I've ever seen a picture of them they are in some room with very little thought given to acoustics- but the color of the speakers matches the furnishings.

The plan:
1. Monitor Audio R270 loudspeakers
2. Onkyo SR-607
3. Subwoofer (still undecided on brand)
4. Monitor Audio R45 rear channels
5. Larger TV (still undecided on brand)
As it stands, I've got a 5-year-old Sharp Aquos LC32DA5U, an old Kenwood KR-4070 amp, Denon CD Player, Pioneer DVD player and some big old ghetto speakers I've had for years.
**update**
Ended up picking up some Monitor Audio R270s for the front, and matching R45s for the rear. Also ordered an Onkyo TX-SR607 receiver.
Space is limited (no vertical blind comments- I'm tearing them out this week)

I'm in love with these speakers! So much sound from such a small speaker- tempted to pick up a second set for the bedroom.

So the speakers are all Atlantic Technology in wall / ceiling.
ICWB 727 for the mains
IWTS 155 for the center
ICTS 6.3e for the rear surrounds, and for the rest of the house
The receiver is a Marantz SR8002
The projector is an Optoma HD8000

Let me know what you think!

It's been good to me in the 4 years I've owned it- no warping or anything. Some of the finish peeled off while moving, but the side shelf covers it up. I like the recess on the back for cables etc. After taking some measurements, the largest TV it'll fit is a 50" so a 52" LCD is out of the question. I was looking at the Besta series from Ikea- sadly, the combo I want is 8" too wide for the space I'm working with. Really wish they'd make half-width vertical panels as they make half-width base cabinets.

I am glad you are having good luck with it, mine, not so much. one of the last times I moved we were carrying it and it flexed and the sliding door popped out and shattered on the floor so that sucks. I just use it in my analog setup now.

I have an Onkyo 6 DVD player that has to be 7yrs old with no issues. I'm on my second receiver but not because the first one died, I just upgraded to a 606 for the HDMI switching. The old 601 still works as new. ALL 3 are refurbished units purchased at about 1/2 of retail price.

TimeWarner HD DVR Box (HDMI/Coax digital audio)
Sony STR-K740P 5.1 Receiver
Sony SS-F5000 Floor Standing Speakers
Sony SS-B1000 Bookshelf Surround Speakers
KRK Rokit RP-6 Center Channel (w/ homebrew speaker to line level converter)
BIC Venturi v1020 10" 160W RMS Powered Subwoofer
Currently looking for a better stand for the TV/gadgets and a better place for the center channel. Yes the center channel is HUGE and is technically a studio monitor, but I had it, and it's better than what was being used, and better than no center channel
I'm able to rattle the windows and walls in my downstairs apt, and the one upstairs w/ the sub. The speakers are adequate for my needs as well and were deeply on sale when I got them all. The TV was a $750 craigslist find last year @ only a year old, and the receiver and original micro speakers were also a CL find at $100.

Ive been into "theater" stuff for awhile. Always wanted to get a pretty nasty setup. Heres mine so far.
50" Insignia Plasma
Ps3 (hooked up HDMI)
Some crappy Sony DVD player but its hooked up HDMI
Onkyo Audio Receiver (NON HDMI)
Motorola Cable box
Setups pretty meh. Great sound, and plenty of it. The onkyo receiver i got a few years ago with speakers for a steal on black friday. Also got the TV for under 600 on black friday. I know, plasmas not the best, but i havent had issues with it besides throwing my cable box remote off with the light output.
I plan on upgrading slowly, as me and my girlfriend move into our house in the summer. So i have that whole house laid out, instead of our small ass room we have now.
I do plan on getting a better model Receiver, with HDMI inputs, most likely will stay with onkyo as i have loved the receiver i have now. Will most likely also get a seperate blue ray, and dvd player. As of right now, if theres anyway yous think I can improve, please let me know! Ill get pictures of my setup later tonite/

Here's some photos of the set up in our family room and a shot from the kitchen area to show the orientation of the room. It's not the best set up by any means and this room was chosen only because we get the most use out of it. We have a formal LR that we don't really use as a hang out spot.
My goal is to convert a playroom that we have right now into a nice home theater at some point but with a 4 year old and an 18 month old not only do we need the space my budget is tight.

Here you can see the (2) rear speakers on the mantle corners

Surround sound and lots of speakers is a myth, the best stereo you will ever hear in your life will come from 2 speakers a great amp and a great pre amp |
I've always felt this way. At the very least a high end two speaker setup has certain familiar sound that I enjoy. Surround sound is great, but there's just something about the classic two speaker setup that I like.
Kind of like tube amplifiers and vinyl records, regardless of the actual sound quality there will always be folks that prefer them.

It is now... Made myself a mount for it. Saw someone make a mount for their center channel with lowes/home depot bookshelf brackets. So I made one of my own. Had to raise the wood up a little on stilts so to speak, but it's pretty solid. I have a bar in the back just bracing the TV in general as it seemed to lean back a fraction of an inch.
It was <$20 for the hardware and wood cut for the diy mount... I'll stain it later. Now I can take my time and shop for a tv stand that I'll be keeping for a long time.
Gonna try to center the tv/speakers in the corner more, just worried about getting the woofer too far out or to the side of the wall and losing some db.

Changed it to vertical, no difference in the sweet spot as far as my living room setup goes. Not saying it's not there, just saying that in any seating position it's not noticeable. Sure I did. It talks about their physical dimensions limiting the size of the drivers thus restricting the dynamic frequency response being output. That is why I have a subwoofer with a variable crossover. My center is rated down to 80hz and my sub covers a range of 39hz to 150hz. There is overlap to make sure that those frequency's are covered.
I certainly understand what the article is saying and ideally you would want a bigger speaker with bigger drivers. Mine, with 2 5 1/4 drivers is fine by me. It matches PERFECTLY to my fronts.

Off-axis distortion.
- Not noticeable, even when measured.
Physical limitations of speaker size due to cabinet size.
- Hence a subwoofer
What am I am missing?
Sometimes I think that people will hear a difference because science tells them they should. If you were to measure frequency distortion due to off axis placement or frequency distortion due to physical speaker size, you would find a difference. However, this difference may bot be as easily detected by the human ear. Just knowing that it is different will convince you that you hear the difference, even if you don't.
Sure, I will hear a difference from a 3" driver and an 8" driver. I will hear the off axis constraints when I am behind the speaker. But the difference of a 5 1/4" driver and a 6 1/2" driver, not so much. Sitting 25 degrees off axis, not so much.

Off axis distortion, can be easily heard especially when the sound is panning from L to C to R (and vice versa). The tonality will change very dramatically, even at 25 degree off axis.
The best is to actually get the exact (or better) speakers for the centre) compared to the rest.

| subwoofer can't always help. The centre channel would be better if it can go down at least as low as 80 Hz. Anything above that will be too audible (that the lower sound is coming from the sub). Dialogue will be very detached from the rest of the system. Off axis distortion, can be easily heard especially when the sound is panning from L to C to R (and vice versa). My center does go down to 80hz and it is not like my set up is anything special. I don't use a satellite set up. I do not like those tiny speakers. I can certainly see where that would be a problem. All bass through the sub, all highs through tiny speakers, and both trying to make up some mid.
I am not saying the off axis distortion isn't there. it is just not that noticeable unless you are listening for it. If you are listening for it, you will hear it, regardless of whether or not it is there.
