2000 Jetta VR6 Replacing front struts

I decided to try and replace the two front struts on the 2000 Jetta and after getting the top strut detached I cant get the strut out of the strut mount. Tried WD40 and pounding, but it won't break loose. Any ideas???? It was supposed to be an easy fix.

Are you trying to get the 2nd nut loose on top of the bearing itself, is that what you mean? As in, you've got the strut out of the car? A couple of blips with an impact will get that off, if that's the case.

Or, are you trying to get the strut out of the steering knuckle, if so, you need a spreader tool or something to open it up a bit. Also, for passenger side you will need to disconnect ball joint nuts as shaft will hit subframe. For top nut you will need a spring compressor, one you get the top plate off. Hopefully this makes sense.

Don't waste your $30.00 on that tool. Just grab an old punch or cold chisel and with a few whacks of the hammer, does the same thing.

i forget exactly what i used when i installed my coilovers but yeah just use something that tapers off, bang it in and it'll spread it open. Pour some penetrating oil and i used a hammer to hit the wheel bearing housing (number 16 in the iamge below)

Autotech sells something similar for $10, with less quality (durability) though.
