Best source for n92 and n88 solenoids?

I have a 2002 Gti with the 5spd triptronic trans and am having issues with it going into second gear when cold. I want to replace these solenoids but can't find them cheap locally.

Anyone know what the best place to source these from is?

Any help is highly appreciated. Thanks

The 5-speed auto that was paired with the 1.8T (09A) is also known as the JF506E (made by JATCO). A variant of this tranny was also use in Mazdas, Land Rovers and Jaguars.

found this info from some other post:

    09A 927 331 - Solenoid valve N89 (brawn)
    09A 927 331 A - Solenoid valve N92 (green)
    09A 927 331 B - Solenoid valve N88 (brawn)
    09A 927 331 C - Solenoid valve N90 (black )
    09A 927 331 D - Solenoid valve N282 (black )
    09A 927 331 E - Solenoid valve N91 (black )
    09A 927 331 F - Solenoid valve N283 (white)
    09A 927 331 G - Solenoid valve N281 (white)
    09A 927 331 H - Solenoid valve N93 (green )

You can pop these #s into 1stvwparts.com or worldimpex.com and order the OEM replacements at about $100 a pop. Other places have off-brand cheapo replacements, if you want to go that route.

Cobra transmission sells a full replacement kit (all private label brand), or individual solenoids (they claim the individually-sold ones are OEM): http://cobratransmission.com/i...8_987

I learned ALL of the above in about one week, by searching the threads here.

Thanks for the help elskeptico. I tried searching again to see what thread you got Cobra Trans from and I must have missed that thread completely.
I had already done some research and that is how I came up with the decision to swap those two solenoids and 1stpartsvw is quoting a similar price as my local dealership. If Cobra's individual solenoids are OEM then they got the best price. They are quoting me around $70 each.

They told me they're OEM, but you might want to confirm before you order for your specific solenoids. Good luck.

BTW, is it throwing any codes? Check engine light on?

No transmission related codes but from what I got out of what I read around here not everyone is throwing codes with the same issue as me. Unless I missed something.

I am curious why you decided on n92 and n88 when it is n88 and n89 that are active when shifting to 2nd gear. n92 is turned on for all gears except 2nd and 3rd.

Re: Best source for n92 and n88 solenoids? (naconi)

Maybe I misread some of the posts, but it seams like n92 seems to be the culprit that keeps the transmission from shifting into second.

When cold the trans isn't shifting into second or third, it shifts directly into fourth when I reach the right speed, happens at around 6000 - 6500 rpm in first gear. From what I get out of this thread http://forums.vwvortex.com/zerothread?id=4642216, N92 needs be inactive in order for the car to go into second and third and right now its most likely sticking on when cold.

My decision to also replace n88 is also based off that thread. I don't want to have to go in there again in order to change that solenoid if it happens that my problem with n92 is covering up any problems with n88.

Please correct me if I missed anything.

Your original post only mentioned 2nd, now that you said it doesn't go into 3rd either I would agree it sounds like n92 is not turning off.

Sorry never even thought to mention that when I made the original post.

I'm going to order the solenoids from Cobra tomorrow. Hopefully this works out. Thanks for the help

I was about to order them this morning, but when I went to move the car I lost reverse!

I guess I need to do some searching to figure out what can cause loss of reverse. Anyone have any ideas? I scanned it with vag-com and no codes.

    Re: (CoolAirVw)

Ok so now the car throws a speed sensor code and when I put it in reverse and give it gas the car slowly moves back and the speedometer increases with rpms but is shows a lolt faster speed than the car is moving.

Other than lost reverse what other symptoms come from a broken band?

I have the same problem with my 02 1.8t. The car will go into reverse but only after a 30 minute warm up. takes longer to warm up to go into reverse than to warm up to shift to 2nd and 3rd. I was going to change the fluid and filter but from what i have read that will not help. do you think the reverse issue is also caused by faulty solenoids?

Don't know if te reverse issue is solenoid related. It seems like something internal is broken.

Does anyone know if the Jetta and Gti 09A transmissions are the same exact trans? I'm planning on picking up a used one.

Thanks for the tip elskeptico. I purchased the solenoid kit and internal wire harness from Cobra Transmission. I put them in and my VW is working fine. And better yet they are in the same city I live in. I told a friend of mine in Alabama that his mechanic told him he needed a whole valve body and they shipped to him. Really happy.

I was having a hard shift in the transmission and according to the dealer I needed a whole new transmission. That is when I started searching the web and found this forum. I then took it to the local shop and he said I was having trouble with the N92 green solenoid. But at the end i decided to change them all, once I was in there.

BTW here is the link to see a pic of the vb from Cobra: http://cobratransmission.blogspot.co...alve-body.html

Just so no one is confused.. dalelauder didn't fix "no reverse" with solenoids. He fixed "hard shift.
