The Wantagh Parkway runs from Long Island to Jones Beach. There is also a bike path that runs parallel to the parkway, stretching from a park in the town of Wantagh to Jones Beach. There is anywhere from 10 to 30 feet of distance between the parkway and the bike path at any given point.I've ridden this bike path a few times, and it's a really pleasant ride. It's is only about 6 miles long, and there are a couple of drawbridges in that stretch, so crazy speeds really aren't very prudent. Then again, drunk motorcycling isn't very prudent, either.

Cops: Drunken motorcyclist kills teen changing flat
Tuesday, July 21, 2009 By JOHN VALENTI john.valenti@newsday.comA bicyclist changing a flat tire on the Wantagh State Parkway bike path was struck by a drunken motorcyclist and killed Monday night, police said.
New York State Police did not immediately release the name of the dead bicyclist, who was identified only as a 19-year-old from Dix Hills.
Police said the crash occurred at 8 p.m., just north of the Goose Creek drawbridge, as the bicyclist changed the flat tire on the bike path, which runs adjacent to the parkway and varies in distance from the road.
Police said witnesses reported that James J. Ryan of New Hyde Park was traveling at a high rate of speed when he lost control of his 2002 Harley-Davidson soft tail motorcycle, then left the northbound roadway, crossed onto the bike path and hit the cyclist.
The bicyclist was airlifted to Nassau University Medical Center, where he died.
Ryan also was transported to NUMC and was admitted to the intensive care unit with "multiple injuries," police said. His age and condition were unknown on Tuesday.
Police said their investigation "indicates alcohol involvement" as a one of the "potential causes" for the crash and charged Ryan with driving while intoxicated, second-degree vehicular manslaughter, second-degree reckless manslaughter, reckless driving and second-degree reckless endangerment. Arraignment details were not available Tuesday.

The scary thing is that could have been anyone- someone sitting, walking their dog, etc. The guy wasn't even riding at the time! A truly tragic wrong place, wrong time scenario. Not that I'm saying it's just dumb luck, of course, it never would have happened if the guy wasn't a drunken f@cktard.

Ah, why am I not surprised it was a harley rider? Though I would have been equally as not suprised if it was a sportbike rider on the way home from the club with shorts and a tee on.
I've noticed some slips in my riding if I'm a bit tired. I can't imagine how anyone would keep a motorcycle level whilest intoxicated.![]()
RIP to the biker.
It'd be some irony if the motorcyclist gets a hefty jail sentence. Drunk moto kills someone= jail time, drunk car driver kills moto guy = community service in most cases.

Never EVER ridden buzzed, drunk or in any way impaired. To ride you need to be 100%. Poor kid with the bicycle. Very sad that some jerkoff decided to ride drunk.

Tell me about it.
If you're not safe with 10 - 30 feet of grass between you and the road, how safe is it when all you've got is the shoulder of the road? Granted, this is a freak accident and has nothing really to do with bikes (it could have been a walker, jogger, etc). But the irony of it...people go to bike paths to avoid the traffic on the roads, and then some drunk veers off the highway right at you..

That road is terrible, I drive it occasionally and people drive on there like it is a freaking racetrack.
Long Island is an example of an area with very few guardrails. The Florida Turnpike finally did it after so many cross over fatalities. It took hundreds of fatalities to finally get it going.

I never take it south of Sunrise, but it seems kinda slow from the Northern State to the Southern State, where I usually drive it. The two lanes in each direction makes it a crappy highway to pick for any shenanigans. Maybe you mean south of Sunrise by the path?

They're always harley riders.
Well over 75% of the DWI motorcycle cases I saw were Harleys. Way to live up to the stereotype. Most of them were fairly old too.Common story, cop stops suspected drunk motorcyclist. They stop, forget they need to pot a foot down. Crash! Hilarity and arresting ensues.

They're always harley riders. It's a lifestyle for them. A damn stupid one too. Most of the motorcycle haters I know had family members who wore the brain bucket and leather vests, got drunk, then crashed the bike and died. Obviously motorcycles are really the cause of their suffering and pain, not their family member's actions or drinking.

Is it wrong of me to be trying to picture what would have happened if these had been the two vehicles in a single accident?
The driver of the motorcycle only gets "driving while intoxicated, second-degree vehicular manslaughter, second-degree reckless manslaughter, reckless driving and second-degree reckless endangerment" ????I have no respect for anyone who operates a motor vehicle while intoxicated. How freakin' hard is it to call a cab or even a f!ckin' tow truck? I've gone to plenty of parties and bars and gotten intoxicated, only to call a tow truck at the end of the night. That way you and your car get home in one piece.

Two manslaughter charges aren't enough?
First time DWI ain't gonna be murder anywhere (CA it is second time)
