Anyone owned one of these, the jimmy/ sonoma from hell? I've always thought these were pretty neat. I think I need to buy myself one and do my oh so favorite LS1,2, or 7 swap.Rule 1:

My uncle has one of each. The Syclone is super fun and handles very well actually. The Typhoon is quite a bit slower and doesn't handle as well either. It hauls around another 400-500 lbs with the same power. You can't really tow much with either and the Syclone has something like a 400 lbs bed capacity. Other than for longevity, I don't know why you would do a V-8 swap. There is plenty of power to be had out of the turbo V-6.
I still want one pretty bad. I know they're probably not the best performing things in the world. Im sure they could be with some light mods. Like getting rid of the negative roll chamber crap would help significantly I'm sure. They're just neat.

I probably wouldnt do the swap. Im just obsessed with the LS series v-8s.
And yes, I know its Cyclone with a "C". lol

Actually, it is spelled with an S, I thought you knew that? Maybe I missed something. Did these use the GN motor?
This girl I use to work with had a typhoon motor put into her blazerit was pretty damn bad ass

GN 3.8L
You know, I first thought it was spelled with an S, then I was talking to someone on AIM about these things and said it was spelled with a C. Whatever...Im definetly like the Typhoon more. I dont know about weighing 400 pounds more though. Im pretty sure a bare-bones s10 weighs 3100ish and a bare-bones blazer like my pig weights 3360(without me in it).
But yeah, its a turbo 4.3 vortec. All it needs is a 5 speed and it would be balls.

No its spelled with an "S". The word Cyclone is spelled like that but the truck is Syclone.

Two of my favorite GM products ever. The others in that area are 65 stingray, GNX, and ZR-1. Other than that i have a heavy ford and VW bias.

Oh crap! You're trying to kill me showing me a thing like that. This man knows how to win.![]()
My favorite engine in my favorite truck chassis. It makes me all giddy just thinking about how much fun I would have.
I think priority number one after I get my cougar done is getting my hands on a typhoon. I dont know how I keep forgetting those when I go to look at what I want to replace my current daily driver with.

I saw a typhoon when i was in tokyo...can't be too many of them that made it over there.
I owned one of these before I bought my R32 and I don't know if I was cursed or not but I had more issues with it then I had actual time driving it. I made the mistake of modding it and once I did that it never drove the same again. So I stripped the Typhoon of all the mods, parted them out and sold it and bought my R.
How did these sell when they were introduced? I mean I knew about them but if you ask most people they'de just stare at you with a stupid look. It'de be nice to see a nameplate revival of these two. GMC's lineup could use a little excitment. They could easily mod up a Canyon to make a Syclone, but I dunno about the Typhoon, with the Blazer/Jimmy all but a memory what could they use? Maybe a Envoy/Trailblazer?
somebody smack for me trying to put these two on a same playing field. The syclone kicked
@$$ but GM once tried to do something like this once before. It was called the S-10 xtreme. I always wanted one, and still do. I'd rather have a syclone though.

That truck was so fast they should have called it the Sychotic. It's amazing what GM can do when they tell the beancounters and focus group analysts to take a week off![]()

Activity is not on my list of activities...
Yeah, these are almost as neat. I just wish GM would to more than just a body panel upgrade. I know there's some suspension upgrades. But given the size of an s10, it could be made to kick some serious ass. And I dont mean just in a straight line.

I'd rock a blazer extreme though, and obviously throw an LS1 in there. I think GM should put an LS series v-8 in all of their products. Just to shut me up.

A buddy of mine has one with a carbon fiber hood and bed lid. That by far is one of the most exhilarating and fun cars I have ever been in. He was running low 11's on 93 and recently blew the head and decided to put an even bigger turbo on it. He was ablt to put down close to 30 PSi with that thing. Here's![]()
to Gm.
The extreme was not even close in comparison............week Ecotec V6 and rear wheel drive.. BS!

I either carry my XD-45 or Kel-Tec .380. Depends on what I'm wearing... the XD-45 is a little large to conceal when wearing shorts. Extra ammo in a backpack in the trunk. Those goddamned zombie bastards aren't going to kill themselves. That's why. - medicracer

I love these trucks!!! even when i first seen them back in 93 i was only like 10 or 11 and thought these were the coolest thing ever and when i see one now i still get like that LOL
Former Syclone owner, current R32 owner. At the time (1991) the Syclone was really something, considering that it was built on a 12 year old truck design. Mine was quite heavily modified, as it was a demo vehicle for my old shop. We specialized in tuning these beasts. As for the Marlboro, there were actually 10 of them made for the Give-Away. A friend of mine owns one.

I wonder how many packs of cigarettes and or sets of lungs you would have to go through to get that.
![]()
When my dad used to smoke I believe each pack of cigarettes was 5 marlboro miles. I think it was 5000 mile points for a tent so I can only imagine how many it would take for a friggen truck. 1000 packs for a tent, I bet its like 100,000,000 for the truck.

I think you had to have a certain number of points to enter a raffle ticket for the Syclones.

A V-8 swap in one of these would be a waste. IMO
I'm bringing this one back from the archives.

there was a typhoon around where I am a couple years ago. Damn that thing hauled ass! Looked terrible at the time, so it's probably not running anymore![]()
I wanted one since I test-drove a Typhoon in 1992 and it was $31,000 back then.I found one for my Dad in 00', 93' Typhoon Black/Black at a dealership with 8,800 miles on it, he picked it up immediately.
After driving the truck once in awhile I had to get one for myself and picked up my 92' Ty on 2001.
The previous owner had a 87' Buick GN and a T-Type so of course it had basic mods, ran low 8's in the 1/8th.
Now I can safely run 22psi on 93 octane in the Typhoon.
Its brutally fast now.

For the purchase price of a clean one, it'd be cheaper to buy a four wheel drive s10 model and swap in the lsx, tranny of choice, and awd transfer case. Plus you wouldn't butcher a limited production, soon to raise in value, classic ... with an S. Unless ofcourse you found one with a blown motor or tranny or slight accident repair needed. Then it's good game, but it won't be as pretty as some of the above examples without a lot more work than a simple motor swap.
to a big thing in a small package.

How is it that nobody in TCL has dogged this truck yet for its horrible interior? Cheap, hard plastics, poor layout, fisherprice switch gear.
Who cares if its fast, SUV + crappy interior = TCL kiss of death.

Many fast ones aren't finished and haven't seen track time.I love mine, GM planned the 4.3 turbo HORRIBLY and hence the high maintenance. I hope to be done with my bowtie motor next yr
